About the book:
In Dee Henderson's novella "Betrayed," Janelle Roberts is freed--thanks to people she doesn't know--after serving six years of a twenty-year sentence for a murder she did not commit. But a murderer is still at large, and Janelle needs to be somewhere safe with someone she can trust. She may not survive another betrayal.
In Dani Pettrey's "Deadly Isle," Tennyson Kent is trapped on the isolated island of her childhood by a storm surge, and she is shocked when the typically idyllic community turns into the hunting grounds of a murderer. Cut off from any help from the mainland, will she and first love Callen Frost be able to identify and stop a killer bent on betrayal before they become the next victims?
In Lynette Eason's "Code of Ethics," trauma surgeon Ruthie St. John saves the life of Detective Isaac Martinez. After a betrayal leads to him getting shot and then attacked while in recovery, Isaac is now a key witness determined to testify. But someone is intent on silencing him--and those around him--forever. Together, Ruthie and Isaac go on the run, desperate to escape the killers hunting him.
My Thoughts:
Dee Henderson's Betrayed - This one had an intriguing premise to it. And I enjoyed catching up with Paul and Ann. But I felt that there was something missing. The story didn't feel finished. Rating - 3 stars
Dani Pettrey's Deadly Isle - This was by far my favorite of the collection. I loved Teni and Callen. I loved how they interacted with each other. This one kept me reading. Rating - 5 stars
Lynette Eason's Code of Ethics - This one was a delight to read. I'm already familiar with the St. John family, so getting to know Ruthie better was fun. I didn't expect the twists and turns this one took. Rating - 4 stars.
Overall thoughts on the book:
These are three talented authors. They know how to keep their readers guessing. I always know that I'm in for a good read with these authors. Overall, I enjoyed the book quite a lot.
I received a copy of the book from the publisher on behalf of one of the authors to help with the promotion of it.

Dead Drift A Review
Published - Bethany House, July 2018
Series - Chesapeake Valor Book 4
Author - Dani Pettrey
Title - Dead Drift
Format - ebook, paper

About the book:
Burning debris littering the ground . . . smoke pluming in the acrid air . . . this is just the beginning if he fails.
Seven years ago, operative Luke Gallagher vanished to become part of an elite team set on capturing a deadly terrorist. When Luke returns to face those he left behind, their help becomes his only hope of stopping his target's latest threat of an attack that would shake America to its core.
Private investigator Kate Maxwell never stopped loving or looking for Luke after he disappeared. But she also never imagined he left her or his life by choice. Now he's back, and together they must unravel a twisting thread of secrets, lies, and betrayal, all while on the brink of a biological disaster.
Will they and their love survive, or will Luke and Kate become the terrorist's next mark?
My Thoughts:
This book was filled with action from the first page. I actually enjoyed the secondary story line better than the main one.
Having built up the characters and their relationships through the previous books, this one didn't jaha to flesh out the secondary characters much. But getting to know Luke and Kate as more than secondary characters was a delight. I loved their chemistry.
I enjoyed this book immensely.
I received a copy from the publisher on behalf of the author to assist in promoting it. I was not required to like the book only give an honest opinion of it. My thoughts and opinions are my own.

Title - Blind Spot
Format - ebook, paper

About the book:
FBI agent Declan Grey is chasing after something. Something that may prevent a terrorist attack. When his investigation leads to an immigrant community, he turns to Tanner Shaw for help. Declan's worked with Tanner before, only this time he has to protect her. Tanner's work has her now working with the FBI as a crisis counselor, giving her more opportunities to butt heads with Declan. But neither can deny the spark between them. They soon find themselves in a race against time for not only their lives but to stop something even bigger.
My thoughts:
This book was page turning. I loved how the characters from the other books are in this one as well. I found myself frequently staying up late to read this.
There are a couple of major revelations in this book, and it makes me even more eager for the fourth in the series.
Declan and Tanner have been sparring since the first book in the series, but seeing their story come about was a delight. Of all the couples in the series so far, I think this pair may be my favorite.
I received a copy from the author and the publisher to help with promotion. I was not required to like the book only give my honest opinion. My thoughts and opinions are my own.

Still Life - A Review

About the book (from Amazon):
Blacklisted in the photography business over a controversial shot, Avery Tate answered an ad for a crime scene photographer. She expected to be laughed at, but crime scene analyst Parker Mitchell hired her outright--and changed her life. But six months ago, when her feelings for Parker became too strong, she left his employ to sort out her heart. Now, for the first time, Avery is facing the world that rejected her to attend the gallery opening of a photography exhibit and support her best friend, who modeled for the show. But the only image of her friend is a chilling photo of her posing as if dead--and the photographer insists he didn't take the shot. Worse, her friend can't be found. She immediately calls Parker for help. As Avery, Parker, and his friends in law enforcement dig into the mystery, they find themselves face-to-face with a relentless and deadly threat.
My Thoughts:
I've loved Dani Pettrey's books since I first discovered her with her debut novel. I know that I will get a book that is a page turner and well written. This one was no exception.
While this one does stand alone in the series, I highly recommend reading book 1 first as Parker, Avery, and the rest are all introduced in that one. What can I say about this book? It was wonderful. I read it rather quickly, I love the relationship between Parker and his buddies as well as between Parker and Avery. There were so many times that my heart just broke for what Avery went through in her life. I love how what is one person's problem becomes everyone's because that's how Parker and his friends are.
I cannot wait until the third book, Declan's story, comes out later this year!
I received a copy of the book from the author to help promote. I was not required to like the book, only to give my honest opinion.

Sins of the Past - A Review

Authors - Dee Henderson, Dani Pettrey, Lynette Eason
Title - Sins of the Past
Format - ebook, paper

Three romantic suspense authors join together to delight readers with a suspense novella collection.
Missing by Dee Henderson - John Graham is the police chief in Cheyenne, Wyoming. When he receives word that his elderly mother is missing, he returns to Chicago. Together with the lieutenant in charge of the case, John begins to realize that maybe something from his past may have triggered his mother's disappearance.
My Thoughts - This one started off really good. I liked the dynamics between Sharon and John. I loved how they'd follow the clues. But then out of nowhere, the author threw in something that turned it in a completely different direction. Until then, I was really enjoying the story. My rating: 3 stars
Shadowed by Dani Pettrey - Ben McKenna is a simple Alaskan fisherman who takes tourists out on his fishing boat. When competitive swimmer Libby Jennings shows up in the rain for a whale watching tour, neither she or Ben expect to be drawn into a web of deceit and situations involving more than just the body they found.
My Thoughts - I loved this story. I loved getting to meet the parents of the McKenna siblings from the Alaskan Courage series. Like all of Dani's books, this story was a thrill ride from start to finish. This was my favorite of the three novellas. My rating: 5 stars
Blackout by Lynette Eason - A young woman, Macey, has been having blackouts over the past several years that are linked back to when she was an unintended part of a burglary gone wrong. When neighbor Chad hears her scream one evening, he rushes over. Together Chad and Macey begin a race against time to see who is trying to kill her. Is it all tied into her past?
My Thoughts - This was another one that I really enjoyed. I loved how quickly it moved. I was glad that my suspicions were proved wrong. It kept me on the edge of my seat. My rating: 4 stars
Overall Thoughts - This novella collection is overall really good. It's fun to pick a collection of novellas and have them being romantic suspense. Fans of these authors will enjoy this book.

Griffin McCray's life hasn't gone as he planned it. He and his three childhood friends, Declan Gray, Parker Mitchell, and Luke Gallagher, would all enter various branches of law enforcement. Griffin and Luke would go to Baltimore PD, Declan to the FBI, and Parker would become a crime scene analyst. Then Luke vanished, and the friendships have crumbled. Griffin's now a park ranger at Gettysburg after having life as a SWAT sniper when a case went bad. Nothing ever happens in the park. Until the one evening that Griffin catches two grave robbers near Little Round Top. Only these skeletal remains aren't of the Civil War variety. He calls in forensic anthropologist Finley Scott, and soon the case heats up. Griffin is reunited with Declan and Parker, and the three try to identify the victim. Only someone doesn't want that to happen. Finley's life becomes in danger and Griffin will do all that he can to protect the woman he's coming to love - even face down the demons of his past.
When I first that Dani Pettrey had a new series coming out, I promptly added it to my never ending to read list. Over the past few years, she's become one of my favorite romantic suspense authors with her Alaskan Courage series.
Going into this new series, I knew it would be about different characters. I wasn't sure what to expect, honestly. This book opens with a bang. And it moved very quickly. I did find it to have a lot more of character building than I expected. I mean the author has introduced each of the main characters for not only this one, but the others in the series.
I liked both Griffin and Finley. I thought that they worked well together. I also loved the interaction with Parker, Declan, Avery, and Kate. As their stories come up, I'm looking forward to reading them. I'm hoping that Declan's story is next, but I don't know.
The suspense was built up in the book. I thought that the killer was one person and ended up being completely wrong. Fans of romantic suspense will enjoy this.
I received a copy of this book for free first from the author to promote, and then a 2nd copy from the publisher to review. My thoughts and opinions are my own.

Reef McKeena has finally returned home. Accepting his family's love and forgiveness hasn't always been easy for him, but he's working hard to make them proud of him. When he volunteers to do Search and Rescue for the Iditarod race, he finds himself paired with local vet Kirra Jacobs. Kirra was a goody-goody growing up. And she and Reef were always at odds for some reason or another. He's the last person she wants to be partnered with, but he claims to have changed. When Reef catches her sneaking out of camp one night in search of her uncle, who has gone missing, Reef knows he has to join her. Soon the pair find themselves racing against time, and the race itself, to get answers and locate Kirra's kidnapped cousin before disaster strikes. But as Reef and Kirra are pulled into more and more danger, neither can deny their growing feelings. Reef wants to show Kirra that he would never hurt her, but Kirra's been hurt bad in the past and is afraid to trust this former bad-boy.
I think that this conclusion to the McKenna family saga is my favorite. I have loved each book in this series, but for some reason, Reef just climbed further into my heart than the other siblings.
True to Pettrey's style, this book is an adventure ride to the finish. I actually found myself having to put the book down because I needed sleep. I love the family dynamics in the McKenna family. I love how they are willing to help each other out, no questions asked.
I also loved how Reef didn't pressure Kirra to share her past. Yes he finds out. But he was willing to give her space. I also loved how Kirra had no other option but to trust Reef.
While I'm sad to say goodbye to this family, I'm excited to see what Dani has in store for her readers next.
I received this book for free from the author for the purpose of promoting. My thoughts and opinions are my own.

When Kayden McKenna agrees to a climbing race with her sister Piper, she gets more than she bargained for when she accidentally stumbles across a body. With her climbing expertise, Kayden suspects that the death wasn't just an accident. When she's asked to help investigate, she can't say no - even if it means working closely with Jake Westin. Jake's past is no longer the mystery it was, and he's now working with Landon and the sheriff's department to investigate the climber's death. But things aren't always what they seem. Threatening messages to both Jake and Kayden cause them to start digging deeper into the case and into Jake's past. Someone feels that they are getting too close to the truth and will do whatever it takes to prevent that truth from coming out. Will Jake and Kayden be safe? And when will they figure out what they mean to the other?
Like every book in the Alaskan Courage Series, this one is one I enjoyed immensely. This has been one my most anticipated books so far this year. I'm happy to say that Silenced didn't disappoint.
I loved watching Jake and Kayden get to the truth. I loved the interaction with the rest of the McKenna clan. I loved getting a glimpse into Reef's story for the next book. I loved how protective of Kayden Jake is. I think that this is my favorite family next to Dee Henderson's O'Malleys. Jake has been my favorite character since the first book.
Sure there's romance in it. A couple of weddings as well. But there is a TON of adventure and suspense. Dani's stories are always filled with a mix of romance, adventure, and suspense.
I received this book for free from the author for the purpose of reviewing/promoting. My thoughts and opinions are my own.

Best Fiction Books of 2013 Blog Hop & Year Review
Ages ago, like in either May or June, I signed up to be a part of the Best of Blog Hop hosted by Diane Estrella. Of course I decided to focus on the fiction one.
Here they are in no particular order. Click on the title to go to my review of the book.
1. A Memory of Light - by Robert Jordan & Brandon Sanderson - I love this 900+ page book because it finally brings closure to a series that I started over ten years ago. Though if you want to start this series, it's best to start it at the beginning. :)

2. A Noble Groom - by Jody Hedlund - I seriously think I spent more time with the cover closed than with it open to read! But this book is probably my favorite one of Jody's and worth the read and reread.
3. Stealing the Preacher - by Karen Witemeyer - Crockett Archer. I loved Crockett when I met him in Short Straw Bride, and his story lived up to my expectations. The supporting cast of characters made this a delight to read. And as with any of Karen's books, I've found that I read them entirely too quickly!

4. Love at Any Cost - by Julie Lessman - A new series. While it was sad to say goodbye to the O'Connor's, I fell in love this family pretty fast. And Jamie has become my favorite of Julie's heroes, surpassing the spots held by Colin and Stephen.

5. King - by RJ Larson - the final volume in the Books of the Infinite Series. I was thrilled to see Ela get a happily ever after. I also loved the king and of course the destroyer-horse Pet/Scythe.

6. Though My Heart is Torn - by JoAnne Bischof - A heart-wrenching saga. This couple just can't get a break. As much as I wanted to dislike Cassie, I found that I couldn't and she was just as much a victim as Lonnie and Gideon.

7. The Wedding Dress - by Rachel Hauck - first book I've read by this author. It pulled me in and wouldn't let me go.

8. House of Hades - by Rick Riordan - the lone children's book on my list. I've followed Percy Jackson for a several years now. Each book just gets a little bit better. I think that this one my be my favorite to date.
9. Pilgrimage of Promise - by Cathy Bryant - I'd gotten this from the author to review, not really knowing what to expect. I was pleasantly surprised by it. Once I finished it, I went back and read books 1 and 2. Book 3's sitting on my Kindle to read and I hope to get to it in 2014.

10. Wings of Glass - by Gina Holmes - Written in the form of a letter to the narrator's unborn baby, I wasn't expecting this to be such a heavy topic. But the way it deals with the topic of abuse is beautiful.

11. Love's Awakening - by Laura Frantz - a beautiful story of love overcoming long-held grudges. This one is literally just as beautiful as the first.

12. Stranded - by Dani Pettrey - I absolutely adore the McKenna family! Gage's story is no different. This man is wounded by his past and outside of his family, doesn't like to let anyone get close to him. Plus there's mystery and romance.

13. On Distant Shores - by Sarah Sundin - I loved this book. I loved seeing how both Georgie and Hutch grew and changed as the story developed. I'm going to be so sad when this series is over.

14. That Certain Summer - by Irene Hannon - While not at all like her suspense books, this story of two sisters pulled me in and held my attention through to the end. Still it was a wonderful romantic book to read on a semi-lazy summer day.

15. Rules of Murder - by Julianna Deering - This was one of the highly talked about books I'd seen on Social Media this year. It's a cross between Agatha Christie and Jane Austen. But it's quirky enough that I enjoyed it.

16. Made to Last - by Melissa Tagg - I saw fun reviews, blog posts, tweets, etc all over my Facebook page for this book. This is pure chick lit. I loved loved loved it! The romantic in me practically swooned.
17. Vanished - by Irene Hannon - The first book in a new romantic suspense series, I couldn't wait to see what happened. Ranks up there with the O'Malley Series and Dani Pettrey's books as favorites.

18. Trapped - by Irene Hannon - I wasn't sure if the second book would be as good as the first. Because sometimes, the second book flops. But not so on this one. In fact, this one is even better than the first. It's a hold -onto-your-seat kind of story.
19. The Icing on the Cake - by Janice Thompson - For some reason, I enjoyed this romantic comedy more than the first one in this series. Haven't quite figured out why that was. But it was enough to make my list for the year.
20. The Heiress of Winterwood - by Sarah Ladd - I first saw the cover for this book ages ago. When it came up for review, I wasn't able to request it at that time. But I did manage to get a copy. And for a debut author, this book didn't feel at all like a first novel. I am looking forward to the second in the series.
21. My Hope is Found - by JoAnne Bischoff - Seriously these books need to come with a kleenex warning. But I found myself eagerly anticipating this conclusion. I won't give away the ending, but it was a journey I won't forget.

22. Bride for Keeps - by Melissa Jagears - This is the author's debut book. And it's a twist to the mail-order bride story. I'll admit that I read A LOT of mail order brides/marriage of conveniences books this year. And it's a storyline that never really gets old for me.

23. Undeniably Yours - by Becky Wade - I'd not read the author's debut book, but I loved this one. It was light-hearted and came at a time for me when I was overly stressed and needed something light and fluffy.
24. Wishing on Willows - by Katie Ganshert - I loved the first book, Wildflowers from Winter, and was excited to read Robin's story. I needed the Kleenex for this one. It reminded me in style to what I call the classic Karen Kingsbury.
25. Once Upon A Prince - by Rachel Hauck - I'm a hopless romantic. I love all things fairytale related. And princes, and castles, and happy endings. I loved Nate and Susannah in this book. I felt I'd read a fairytale story by the end of it.
So while I read a lot of really excellent books, it was a hard decision to narrow it down to the 25 that I have listed. I really tried to trim the list down as well. In fact, since I just limited it to ones I've posted reviews about on my blog, these three titles didn't make it - Ella Enchanted, The China Garden, and Lynette Easman's newest one, No One to Trust. The review for No One to Trust will be posted in January.
I read a couple of books that while I may not have ranked them outstanding, they did stand out. Burning Sky by Lori Benton and Under a Blackberry Moon. Both of these books had characters who were not the typical heroine. Yet I found them slow moving, though rich in history. Other authors I enjoyed this year include Rose Gordon, Cora McCormick, Susan May Warren, and more.
I did find a few books/authors who disappointed me this year.
JK Rowling - Casual Vacancy - I love Harry Potter. I knew going into it, that this would be vastly different. But I wasn't expecting to feel like I'd been tortured.
Karen Kingsbury - A longtime fan of hers, I was disappointed in both the Chance and Fifteen Minutes. She's lost me as a reader.
Jessica Dotta - Born of Persuasion - There is no middle ground on this. The entire review will come soon. But it was either really good or really bad.
So that's what my favorites & disappointments were like this year. What about you?

I exceeded the maximum number of characters in my labels post. So authors, I couldn't list all of you.

Stranded - A Review
Darcy St. James didn't expect to return to Alaska so soon. When she answers a plea for help from a reporter friend of hers, Darcy thinks that she'll enjoy an Alaskan cruise while helping to figure out what has Abby scared. She didn't expect Abby to go missing. She also didn't expect that her cover would cause her to work closely with the McKennas, especially Gage. Gage McKenna is pleased to have the family company, Last Frontier Adventures, being the sole excursion provider for the Bering cruise ship. He's also joining the crew as the on-ship liaison. The last person he expects to see is Darcy St. James. She walked into his heart last winter, and he's been trying to forget her. So when he finds her up to her ears in an investigation, he thinks he's been right all along and she's more concerned with her career than those around her. He couldn't be more wrong. But with danger lurking around every corner and timing running out on both the cruise and the investigation, the pair join forces to get to the bottom of things. But will either heart be able to recover?
I've loved the McKenna family since the first book. I actually think that this one is my favorite one of the series so far. Filled with romance and adventure as well as faith, I was engrossed from the first page. I read this book entirely in one setting because I didn't want to put it down. There are so many things I loved about this book. Gage is a wounded soul and it shows. Yet he's also a strong character. He's loyal to his family and to those who have managed to get into his heart. I also loved the fact that Jake and Kayden had a larger role in this book than they've had in the past. And finding out more about Jake's past is a bonus!
Like the other heroes in this series, Gage is featured at the Fiction Hero Features as a hero of the month. I invite my readers to head over there and read the exclusive tidbits about Gage.
I received this book for free from the author for the purpose of reviewing and promoting. My thoughts and opinions are my own.
My mother is the next one inline to read my copy of this book, so as soon as I remember to, I'll take it over to her.

Shattered - A Review
Piper McKenna loves her brother. So when he shows up on her doorstep covered in blood, she firmly believes he's innocent. Convincing Deputy Landon Grainger of that is something else entirely. Landon's trying to do his job, despite the fact that his boss is pushing for a quick conviction and that the evidence all points to Reef McKenna, brother of the woman Landon loves. When Piper launches her own investigation, Landon realizes that he has to keep her safe from herself. Yet someone is determined to pin the murder on Reef and will stop at anything to see that justice isn't served. Will Landon and Piper be able to get to the truth before something else happens? And when will they admit their feelings?
I read the first book in this series, Submerged and loved it. The McKennas remind me of Dee Henderson's O'Malley family. Like those in the O'Malley series, this book stands alone. It is helpful to read the first in the series, but not necessary. Romance, suspense, and adventure all abound in this book. I loved that the characters are believable and they obviously love their family. There were very few things that I didn't enjoy about the book, and I am looking forward to the next book in the series. I'm hoping it will be about either Gage or Kayden.
I read this book for pure pleasure. My thoughts and opinions are my own.

Submerged - A Review
Bailey Craig returns to Yancey, Alaska to bury her aunt and put the estate in order. She's not returned since she left ten years before. In a small town like Yancey, her past has branded her and she can't escape it. Cole McKenna runs a successful adventure business with his siblings. He's also part of a Search and Rescue team that assists the local law enforcement. Bailey's aunt was in the plane crash that he helped with the recovery of. Now there are two dead divers which link back to Bailey's aunt. Things don't make sense. As Bailey and Cole dig deeper into the mystery surrounding the crash and the dead divers, more and more pieces of the puzzle fall into place. But the closer they get to the truth, the more danger they're in. Now there's a rising body count and a mystery that needs to be solved. In the midst of it all, will Bailey's past ruin her chance at happiness with Cole or will she be the next victim?
Debut novelist Dani Pettrey writes a book full of intrigue, adventure, and romance. I was kept on the edge of my seat through most of the book. I really enjoyed reading this. In some ways, this reminded me of Terri Blackstock, Dee Henderson, Brandilynn Collins, and Irene Hannon. I loved Cole's sense of being a protector to both his family and to Bailey. I also loved the way that his family took Bailey in and loved her and accepted her despite all of the smudges of her past. Bailey struggled with the belief that a holy, perfect God could really love her. Sure she'd accepted it, but she still struggled with it. Through Cole and his family, she learns about grace. I am eagerly awaiting the next book in this series.
I received this book for free from the publisher, Bethany House, for the purpose of reviewing. My thoughts and opinions are my own.
I recommend this to fans of Irene Hannon, Terri Blackstock, Dee Henderson, and Brandilynn Collins. Also recommended to those who love romantic suspense.
