About the book (Amazon):
Natchez, MS; 1791
Anxious for his brothers to join him on the rugged frontier along the Mississippi River, Connor O’Shea has no choice but to indenture himself as a carpenter in exchange for their passage from Ireland. But when he’s sold to Isabella Bartholomew of Breeze Hill Plantation, Connor fears he’ll repeat past mistakes and vows not to be tempted by the lovely lady.
The responsibilities of running Breeze Hill have fallen on Isabella’s shoulders after her brother was found dead in the swamps along the Natchez Trace and a suspicious fire devastated their crops, almost destroyed their home, and left her father seriously injured. Even with Connor’s help, Isabella fears she’ll lose her family’s plantation. Despite her growing feelings for the handsome Irish carpenter, she seriously considers accepting her wealthy and influential neighbor’s proposal of marriage.
Soon, though, Connor realizes someone is out to eliminate the Bartholomew family. Can he set aside his own feelings to keep Isabella safe?
My Thoughts:
I honestly don't know why it took me so long to start this book. But it did. I was captivated by the first few pages. And while it took me about 2 weeks to actually read the book, I'm so glad that I finally got around to it.
I loved Connor. I loved how he was determined to keep Isabella safe at all costs. I loved how she was just as determined to not let him. I also enjoyed learning more about the history of Natchez as most of my knowledge of that town comes from the form of the musical Showboat.
I'm looking forward to seeing these characters again in the next one of the series, about Connor's brother Quinn.
I received a Kindle copy via NetGalley from the publisher. My thoughts and opinions are my own.

Pursued - A Review

Series - Nikki Boyd Files Book 3
Author - Lisa Harris
Title - Pursued
Format - ebook, paper

Nikki Boyd is returning to Nashville on what should be a routine flight. Then the plane crashes. Suddenly Nikki finds herself in the midst of chaos. When the woman who was seated next to her disappears, the FBI ask Nikki to help. But it's a race against time, and the FBI won't share all of the details. Can Nikki and her team find answers before it's too late?
I've enjoyed each book in this series and this one was no exception. I loved how fast paced this book was. The twists and turns that the case followed had me eagerly turning the pages.
What I found different than the others in the series was that Nikki was a victim this time as opposed to the investigator. Seeing her attempt to separate herself from her job was interesting. Especially when she was trying to figure out her relationship with Tyler.
I recommend this series to anyone who enjoys romantic suspense.
I received the Kindle copy of this book from the publisher via NetGalley for the purpose of giving my honest opinion. My thoughts and opinions are my own.

Every Bride Has Her Day - A Review
Published - May 2016, Revell Books
Series - Brides With Style Book 3
Author - Janice Thompson
Title - Every Bride Has Her Day
Format - ebook, paper

Katie Fisher and Brady James are finally engaged and eager to start planning their big day. But their friends at the bridal shop all want to plan something else for them. As does their families. Will Katie's own ideas get lost in the mix? Will she stand firm with her ideas and have the day she's always dreamed about, or will her family, Brady's family, and their friends spoil it for them?
I always know that when I see Janice Thompson's name on a book that I'm in for a sweet funny story. I was proved right once again. This is the third book in the Brides With Style series and they do need to be read in order.
Having followed Katie and Brady's love story of the past two books, I was thrilled to get to the book with their wedding. Of course knowing the cast of characters, their happily ever after wasn't going to be simple.
I loved the secondary characters, from Queenie and the WOPers to the girls at Cosmopolitan Bridal. They make for some delightful bits of conversation. Of course there are misunderstandings, but I love how they get worked out.
I'd love to see a story done on Jane, as she was the only one who hasn't yet had a happily ever after.
I look forward to Janice's next book.

Title - The Silver Suitcase

Two women, decades apart, joined by the secrets in one suitcase. In 1939, Canada is teetering on war. Farmgirl Cornelia's heart hasn't been the same since she lost her mother five years before and blames God. When a young man named Henry arrives for the summer, the two become close. When tragedy strikes again, Cornelia doesn't know what to do. She's alone with a secret, so she makes a choice that will haunt her for decades to come. Unable to talk to anyone, she pours out her heart to her diary. Decades later, Cornelia's granddaughter, Benita, is struggling in her marriage. In the span of a week, she experiences several losses including the death of her beloved grandmother. The resulting emotional toll take their place on Benita seeking her to discover her grandmother's diary. Can the secrets of her grandmother's life bring healing to her own?
This book intrigued me because the cover is so pretty. I'll admit that I didn't know anything about the book or the author before picking it up.
I was rather surprised at how quickly I was drawn into Cornelia's story, especially her diary. My heart for all she went through. Benita on the other hand, kinda of annoyed me. I found that she didn't like to let go of controlling things. But the way things worked out, made it all worth it in the end.
I'll probably read more by this author because her style was quick and easy to follow along with.
I received the Kindle version of this book from NetGalley for the purpose of reviewing. My thoughts and opinions are my own.
Recommended to fans of Tracie Peterson, WWII fiction, historical & contemporary fiction, women's fiction.

Until We Meet Again - A Review

Title - Until We Meet Again
Format - ebook, hardcover

Cassandra has no choice but to spend the summer with her family at beach house in Massachusetts. She craves adventure not garden parties and country clubs. When she meets a mysterious young man on her family's private beach claiming that the property is his, her world is rocked. Cassandra and Lawrence find themselves swept into a mystery that is 100 years in the making. He's from 1925 and she lives in the present. As the two get to know each other, they discover the dangers of messing with time. Cassandra finds out that Lawrence's life is in jeopardy, but if she changes the past what will the effects be on the future?
I don't read a lot of time travel novels, but this one piqued my interest. It was a quick read and I found myself engrossed in the story pretty early on.
The time travel concept was unique in this story from any I've ever read. I actually kind of liked it that way. It made the book more fascinating. One of my favorite scenes was when Cassandra recognized the danger of her association with Lawrence and the ripple effect it had on her timeline, and she tried to stay away. I did enjoy the research she put into attempting to save Lawrence. And the parts that were told from Lawrence's point of view reminded me of an elegant time that is no more. I guess that was the point.
I did feel that Cassandra could have used a little more depth to her. But if the author's intention was to have her come across as a bratty teenager, she succeeded. I'll admit that the book didn't end the way I was hoping, but that doesn't mean that it wasn't good!
I'd recommend this book to fans of young adult literature and time travel novels.

Heirloom Brides - A Review
Published - November 2015, Barbour Books
Authors - Tracey Bateman, Joanne Bischof, Kim Vogel Sawyer, Mona Hodgson
Title - The Heirloom Brides Collection
Format - ebook, paper
Find on Amazon
In this collection of four novellas, four different women find love while each has a "heirloom" item.
Something Old by Tracey Bateman
Summary: Betsy and her grandfather are at the general store when an ice storm delays them. When her grandfather slips on the ice and has to recover, Betsy is forced to admit that her grandfather kept secrets from her that include the fact that she's now homeless! Wanting to reclaim her grandfather's watch, she begins seeking work to repay his debts. Along the way, she's forced to admit her feelings for the son of the mercantile's owner.
My thoughts: This was ok. I've read better. I've read worse. I really enjoyed the secondary characters. Still it was a quick read. Rating - 3 stars.
Something New by Joann Bischof
Summary: Wren's family has had to take in boarders to make ends meet since her doctor father passed away. When the young man who stole her heart years ago returns, Wren is determined to let him go. Only she doesn't realize that he's building her a new home and hoping to marry her!
My thoughts: I think I liked this one the best of all of them. I loved getting to know Wren. I loved that her heirloom item appeared to be the seeds from her British grandmother, when in fact it was a home of her own. Rating - 4 stars
Something Borrowed by Kim Vogel Sawyer
Summary: When Clara's father is injured felling a tree, she must seek help from their neighbors. Painfully shy, and already assuming that she's a spinster, Clara must learn to set aside her fears and reach out to her community, even accepting the "borrowed" help from her nearest neighbor. And of course love happens when she lets down her walls.
My thoughts: This one was different. I loved the fact that the something borrowed was a person and not an object. But watching Clara struggle to join into her community tore at my heart. Rating - 4 stars.
Something Blue by Mona Hodgson
Summary: Darla arrives back in Cripple Creek hoping to start fresh. She's a nurse now, and while she expects there to be bad feelings between one of the doctors at the hospital, she's hoping that she can just go about doing her job. She doesn't expect to be sent on home visits. Or to be utterly captivated by three little girls and their widowed father, who happens to be a patient of hers. Yet she is. But when her past rears its ugly head, will Darla let go of it once and for all?
My thoughts: It was nice to return to Cripple Creek. I can't say that I really cared much for Darla, though the children stole the show. It was a quick read. Rating - 3 stars
Overall thoughts:
Novellas are a hit and miss with me most of the time. Some are better written than others. Some I'll enjoy more than others. But for people who enjoy quick stories, then novella collections are for them. I do enjoy them, don't get me wrong. But sometimes I like a little more meat.
I received the Kindle version of this book from NetGalley for the purpose of reviewing. My thoughts and opinions are my own.

Every Girls Gets Confused - A Review
Published - October 2015, Revell Books
Series - Brides with Style Book 2
Author - Janice Thompson
Title - Every Girl Gets Confused
Format - ebook, paper
Find on Amazon
Katie Fisher is loving her job working at Dallas's elite bridal store. And she's loving every minute she spends with her hunky boyfriend, Mavericks player, Brady James. She's got her man and she should have a happily ever after right? Yet Katie's life never goes the way she plans. For starters, the bridal shop has become almost a war zone with hard-to-please brides and their opposing basketball loving families. Plus her parents want her to move back to the tiny town of Fairfield where her former boyfriend wants to rekindle their romance. And then there's Brady. Katie knows that there's something going on with him that he's not sharing with her. As he seems to pull away, Katie tries hard to let him have his space. After all, she's sure he loves her, right?
Janice Thompson's books always make me laugh. I was so delighted to read this one. This is the second in the series, and they do need to be read in order. One of the things that I love about Janice's books is that each chapter has a title or a quote from a singer or actress. In this book, they are either Doris Day song titles or phrases.
First there's Katie. She's a fun narrator. I'm enjoying watching her grow more into her character in this book. Brady is a sweetheart.
But for me, it's the supporting cast of characters that really make this book shine. From the workers in the bridal shop to Katie's crazy relatives, these are the characters that had me laughing and giggling my way through the book.
I'm looking forward the the conclusion to this series when it comes out next year.

Nikki Boyd is driven. She's a member of the Tennessee Missing Persons Task Force, and strives to make sure that other families don't suffer the way hers has. Ten years ago, her sister went missing. The case is still unsolved, and Nikki will do anything to make sure that other families get answers to their missing persons cases. A day of rock climbing is cut short when Nikki is called to assist with the disappearance of a teen girl. At first, this appears to be like any other missing person's case until a Polaroid photo of the missing girl shows up. For Nikki, this may be the first real break in her sister's case. But is she too close to the situation? Because the closer that she gets to the finding the girl and who abducted her, Nikki starts to feel less like the hunter and more like the prey.
I've enjoyed Lisa Harris's books in the past. This one was no exception. It was different though. Her previous books had an obvious romantic element in it, this one, there is a hint of the romance, but it's not obvious. I'll be interested to see how that relationship develops.
This book was very easy to read. The action started off immediately. And then when Nikki got pulled to assist with the missing teen, it got even more exciting. I also found that it was a quick read.
I like Nikki. I like how determined she is. It'll be fun to see how much more she grows and develops as the series progresses. I'm really looking forward to see how her relationship with one particular guy progresses and if he will admit his feelings or not.

After her mother's death, Hannah Sterling wishes that they could have been closer. All of her life, Hannah felt that Lieselotte did not love her and was incapable of love. When she overhears a conversation between her aunt and a family friend, Hannah is determined to find the answers that will unlock Lieselotte's past and possible provide closure for Hannah. One startling discovery is that Hannah has a grandfather living in Germany. To discover all she can about her mother, Hannah travels to Germany. There she discovers that thirty years before, Lieselotte's father was quickly ascending the ranks of the Nazi Party and that he wanted an advantageous marriage for his daughter - not Lukas, the boy Lieselotte has loved for years. Lieselotte had no idea how far exactly her father would go to ensure her cooperation, and his actions lead to a rift that Hannah has no hope of bridging. Hannah's grandfather is also hiding wartime secrets. His secrets force Hannah to reevaluate all she knows about her mother and to figure out how she can atone for her family's tragic past as well as use the information to shape her future.
Every since I read Promise Me This, I've discovered that Cathy's books are very gripping. They have a tendency to hold me captive and not let me go. This one was no exception.
Set both in WWII and the 1970's, I was captivated. I had an idea as to where Lieselotte's story was going and I wasn't surprised to discover that I was right. Hannah's story on the other hand, I had no idea in what direction her story would go. I loved the WWII portion better than the other. But overall, it was a good book.
Both Hannah and Lieselotte are deep characters. Yet what I really loved is how Hannah's attitude changed toward her mother as she learned exactly what happened. For a while, it seemed that every character in the book had a secret. And some of those secrets were huge. But the way things resolve after they came to light, made wading through the secrets worth it.

I received this book for free from Tyndale for the purpose of reviewing. My thoughts and opinions are my own.

Summary (From Goodreads):In the summer of 1938, Layla Beck’s father, a United States senator, cuts off her allowance and demands that she find employment on the Federal Writers’ Project, a New Deal jobs program. Within days, Layla finds herself far from her accustomed social whirl, assigned to cover the history of the remote mill town of Macedonia, West Virginia, and destined, in her opinion, to go completely mad with boredom. But once she secures a room in the home of the unconventional Romeyn family, she is drawn into their complex world and soon discovers that the truth of the town is entangled in the thorny past of the Romeyn dynasty.
At the Romeyn house, twelve-year-old Willa is desperate to learn everything in her quest to acquire her favorite virtues of ferocity and devotion—a search that leads her into a thicket of mysteries, including the questionable business that occupies her charismatic father and the reason her adored aunt Jottie remains unmarried. Layla’s arrival strikes a match to the family veneer, bringing to light buried secrets that will tell a new tale about the Romeyns. As Willa peels back the layers of her family’s past, and Layla delves deeper into town legend, everyone involved is transformed—and their personal histories completely rewritten.

My Thoughts:
It isn't often that I have to put down a book I'm reviewing. This one, for me, fell in that category. I tried. I really did try. The summary captured my attention. And I did find parts rather intriguing. But it wasn't enough for me.
First, I was confused. I wasn't sure what character went where. While the confusion lessened as I went along, by the time I was at 64% done, I was still confused. I also found myself not being able to follow the plot very well. Sure I got the general idea - Layla's writing a book and all the characters have their own ideas of what the truth should be.
Second, the chapters seemed to drag on. Literally. I expected to be further along after finishing the chapter (3 for example) than looking at my Kindle and seeing I was only at 5%. I'll admit that I didn't finish the book. I really couldn't take it anymore. It was long and drawn out. I'm not saying that I like short, quick reads. Because I don't. Not really. What I do enjoy is a book that moves along nicely and doesn't feel that it is struggling to make a point. I've read books with well over 1000 pages before and they didn't drag like this one.
Third, the characters. There are alternating point of views, and while I'm used to that, in this book it felt a little abrupt. I didn't like Felix at all. I found him to be too controlling. And Jottie. She's a grown woman. She could have stood up to her brother! I thought Layla was flakey. And Willa was probably the only one who truly intrigued me.
I very rarely will give a book one star. I also very rarely will not finish a book I've been asked to review. I checked the reviews on Amazon on this one. I'm in the minority here. But then again, this particular book really isn't for me. Others may love it. Some obviously do. But for me, I think I'll pass on it.
I received this book for free via NetGalley for the purpose of reviewing. I wasn't required to like the book, only to give my honest opinion, which I have done.

Fuzzy Mud - A Review
Published - August 2015, Delacorte Books for Young Readers
Author - Louis Sachar
Title - Fuzzy Mud
Format - hardcover, ebook, audio
Find on Amazon
Marshall Walsh is a 7th grader at the prestigious private school, Woodridge Academy. He always walks home with 5th grader Tamaya Dhilwaddi. Their route is predictable, after all they're both good kids. But when bully Chad Hilligas picks a fight with Marshall one day, their routine is changed. Marshall wants to avoid a fight and decides to take a short-cut through the off-limit woods. Tamaya joins him. Neither child realizes that those steps into the woods will change their lives. They soon discover that there is a substance that is dangerous. When a classmate goes missing, both Marshall and Tamaya head back to the woods, because they KNOW what happened. As authorities become involved, Marshall, Tamaya, and Chad learn the importance of friendship. And their knowledge of the substance may just save the entire world's population. Provided they can be rescued in time.
I've long enjoyed Louis Sachar's books. I remember reading the Wayside Stories books as a child. I remember being in college when Holes came out in 1998. I was fascinated with it.
When I saw this one available to review on NetGalley, I jumped at the chance to review it. Yes, I know. It's not my usual read of Christian fiction. But it's fun to branch out on occasion.
But this is a book that, like Holes, will grip the reader. I loved how he brought the details of a disaster to light, but kept it simple. The main characters are the kids. The other details are found out through the government investigations.
I also really liked Tamaya. She's a good girl. She wants so hard to be noticed. But she's a good girl. Yet when she IS finally noticed, all she wants is for her life to return to normal. I also think it's kinda cute the way that she seems to be rather protective of Marshall and later Chad.
I think that this is a book that would generate plenty of classroom discussion if it were read aloud in the class. The reading level is targeted at grade 5, but as a read aloud, students in 3rd or 4th grade would enjoy it.
I received the Kindle version of the book from NetGalley for the purpose of reviewing. My thoughts and opinions are my own.
Recommended to fans of Louis Sachar, children's literature, Katherine Applegate, Drew Daywalt, R.J. Palacio, librarians, Jessica Day George.

Kate Adams has finally identified the plant that is responsible for tearing her family apart. Yet someone else doesn't want her research into it to go any further than it already has. With Kate staying with her injured colleague, she hopes she's out of danger. And that's what detective Tom Parker hopes too. Yet a runaway case he's working keeps entwining with Kate's penchant for being in danger. Only this time, they seem to be related. Will Kate ever be safe?
This is the conclusion to the Port Aster series. Trust me. This is a series that needs to be read in order.
I thought that it was just ok really. First of all, I have read the prior books. And I enjoyed them. I enjoyed this one as well, but I felt that things got tied up too nicely. And too conveniently. I'd figured out about halfway through that one of the characters wasn't a suspect.
But still, reading Kate's romance with Tom was pretty fun. And learning about some of the different plants and their antidotes was interesting. I thought that the epilogue was a nice touch.
I'd say that those who enjoy cozy mysteries would really enjoy this book.

Five Brides - A Review

Title - Five Brides
Format - ebook, paper

With five single women sharing an apartment together in the early 1950's Chicago, they each live their own independent lives. They rarely see each other let alone all have a day off at the same time. One rare occasion all five roommates were home on the same Saturday, and they spy a bridal gown in the window of the famous Carson, Pirie, Scott & Co. Each of the girls fell in love with the dress. They immediately ask to try on the dress - all five of them - though none of them have a date let alone a boyfriend. The girls decide to pool their money and purchase the dress. Yet how can one dress be shared among five completely different women? And which woman will end up with the dress?
I'll admit that I was intrigued by one dress being shared among five different women and the stories they would tell. So I requested to review this book. I wondered how the concept would work. I was impressed. This is the first book I've read by this author. And I enjoyed it immensely.
I think that the story line that intrigued me the most was Betty's story. While it appeared that Joan really was the main character, I actually liked Betty the best. Though I'd have still liked to have discovered what happened to the other girls AFTER their weddings. Betty, though, we kinda of found out what happened. And then of course we discover which of the girls ended up with the dress.
I'd be interested in reading more books by this author. I found the book to be a rather quick read, once I started it that is.

My Heart Stood Still - A Review

Author - Lori Copeland
Title - My Heart Stood Still
Format - ebook, paper

Anne-Marie and her sisters are beautiful thieves. But they got caught. Disguised as nuns, the sisters find themselves in a jail wagon heading off to jail when a Comanche party attacks the wagon. Each sister is rescued by a different man and sets off in a different direction. They each vow to meet up again at Mercy Flats. Anne-Marie finds herself rescued by the Crow warrior, Creed Walker. Creed is a man of secrets and few words. The more time that he spends in Anne-Marie's company, the more that he is drawn to her. When they find themselves seeking refuge with the Apache tribe Creed was adopted into, Anne-Marie hopes to learn more of the man she is falling for. She doesn't expect to meet the woman he is promised to. Add some outlaws after the gold they inadvertently stole, Anne-Marie and Creed have what appears to be insurmountable obstacles to overcome before they can find happiness together.
I enjoyed this book much more than the first in the series. I think the reason for that is that Anne-Marie was rather funny. The situations she found herself in were humorous. And the chemistry between her and Creed was fun to watch develop too.
I don't think that this was up to the standards I've come to expect from Lori Copeland. I've read almost all of her books, and this one just didn't seem quite as developed as some of the others. Still it was an enjoyable read. I look forward to the third book in the series.

Seeker - A Review
Published - February, 2015, Delacorte Books for Young Readers
Author - Arwen Elys Dayton
Title - Seeker
Format - hardcover, audio, ebook
Find on Amazon
Quin Kincaid has trained her entire life to be a Seeker. While she doesn't entirely know what that entails, she knows it is her destiny. The night that she and one of the other apprentices take their Oaths, she discovers the truth her father kept hidden from her. Vowing to be a different Seeker than her father, Quin soon finds herself in a battle for her life that leads her to question everything she'd been taught or told about her family, the boy she loves, and even herself.
This is the first book I've ever read by this author. And while there are comparisons to the Divergent Series or to Hunger Games listed on the back from various review sources, I found that comparing this book to those series is probably not the best thing. The only comparison to those series would be that this is in fact a dystopian novel. And that the main character is a girl. But that's where the similarities end.
I'll admit that the description of this book intrigued me. It really did make me want to read it. Picking it up, I had questions. And as the story unfolded, my questions didn't fully get answered. Even after finishing it, I still don't have a clear understanding of exactly what a Seeker is or the purpose of the Dreads. But I can live with unanswered questions because I know that there will be a sequel due out next year.
The story is told through the points of view of Quin, John, Shinobu, and Maud. It also takes the reader from Scotland to Hong Kong and back again. The various points of view didn't really bother me. I'm used to reading things with multiple points of view. The jumping from location to location didn't bother me too much either because I'm used to that. What did bother me though was that the "interludes" were back story into the characters that would probably have been useful to have earlier in the book.
As far as the characters go, my favorite was the Young Dread, Maud. I thought she was the best developed. John, Shinobu, and Quin all could have used some deeper development. And the whole love triangle thing drove me crazy. To me, the choice as to which of the boys Quin would ultimately end up with was obvious from the beginning. And while one of the two boys is made out to be a villain, I found that the author didn't do the best job in driving that point across. I actually thought that he was more misunderstood than anything else, and that his determination to reclaim what he considered rightfully his family's property had him heading down a path that could very well have been wrong. But was he a true villain? No, not in my opinion.
Overall, though, I enjoyed the book. It's probably not a favorite. But is was a fairly quick read. I'll look for the sequel when it comes out next year so I can see if my questions are answered.

Kate Adams would like nothing better than to live a peaceful life immersed in her research and the budding relationship with Detective Tom Parker after the past few months of trying to solve the murder of her friend. Yet, trouble has a way of finding Kate. This time it's counterfeit bills that she accidentally uses to purchase groceries for her elderly neighbor. As the case to find the counterfeiters unfolds, Kate soon finds herself in the midst of another police investigation that soon turns deadly. Long held secrets are revealed as Kate and Tom race to find this new threat to Kate.
I enjoyed reading the first book in the series when I was able to review it. This one was just as much of a page turner. The story moves along quickly and the characters had a bit more depth to them this time.
I still love Tom. I love how he strives to have Kate's best interests in heart. I do think that those two need to sit down and have a good conversation, but their relationship is progressing nicely. I look forward to seeing how it progresses through the series.
This was a pretty fast read for me. While by no means is it my favorite one, it was still good. It'd make a perfect read for a lazy summer day or the beach.

Blossom Street Brides - A Review

Author - Debbie Macomber
Series - Blossom Street
Title - Blossom Street Brides
Format - ebook, hardcover, audio

Lydia Goetz is the owner of A Good Yarn. Her shop is a popular one on Blossom Street. Lauren and Bethanne are just a couple of the customers who come in to purchase the yarn for the baby blanket in the window. Lauren's younger sister has excitedly announced that she's pregnant. Lauren is happy for her sister but also feels that her life isn't going the way she'd planned it. When she gives her long time boyfriend an ultimatum and he stands her up again, Lauren decides to cut herself free from him. Meeting a man that she thinks she has nothing in common starts to bring new hope to her heart. Will her happily ever after be on the horizon? For newlywed Bethanne, she is struggling to balance a long distance marriage and an ex-husband who wants her back. The news that she'll soon be a grandmother has her in the shop buying yarn. But will this news draw her back to her ex or will she remember that her marriage is worth fighting for? As the lives of Lauren and Bethanne intersect in the yarn shop, Lydia also realizes she's got some problems that need the care of these women. Lydia's adopted teenage daughter is having traumatic nightmares and doesn't want to talk about them. Plus who is responsible for all of the baskets of knitting projects showing up around town? Lydia seeks the answers to those questions and finds more than she thought.
For some really strange reason, I believe that this is the first Debbie Macomber novel I've read. I seriously don't know why it's taken me this long to find her, but after having read this book, I can easily see how she is so popular.
I really enjoyed this book. And while it is a part of the Blossom Street Series, it stands alone. Other characters from other books are mentioned, but what I loved about this book was the relationships. The relationships between the women and the relationships that extended into their families and work lives. My overall favorite character was Rooster, the man that Lauren happens to meet. I loved the depths to each of the main characters. I also loved how this book split perspectives from one character to another. Yet those transitions didn't allow for the reader to get lost. Instead it allowed for a rich reading experience.

Readers, if you are like me and have never picked up one of Debbie's novels, I highly recommend this one. True it is not Christian Fiction, but there was nothing in it that would be considered "questionable."

Summary (from Amazon)
A spunky young widow hires a farmhand with a bad reputation to help her get her cotton to Jefferson to meet the wagon train, and sparks fly—but can she love a man who doesn't love the Lord?
Susannah Abbot Baylor reluctantly hires Henry Buckmeyer to help her along the Jefferson Trace, the hard stretch of land between her Texas farm and the cotton market, where she is determined to get a fair price for her crop. It’s been a rough year, and she’s in danger of losing the land her husband left to her and the children, but she’ll need help getting both of her wagons to Jefferson safely. She knows Henry’s reputation as a layabout and is prepared for his insolence, but she is not expecting his irresistible good looks or his gentle manner. Soon they are entwined in a romantic relationship that only gets more complicated when Susannah learns that Henry doesn't know God the way she does. Dangers arise on the road—but none as difficult as the trial her heart is going through.
Will Susannah and Henry’s love overcome their differences? And will she get her crop safely to the cotton market with enough money to save the farm? In this heartening and adventurous tale, a young woman’s fortitude, faith, and heart are put to the ultimate test.
This is the first book I've ever read by this author. To be perfectly honest, I really failed to connect with the characters. I found the narrative to be long and descriptive, and when I was at 30% finished (I had a Kindle copy), I was feeling that I should have been a lot further along. I ended up skimming the rest of the book to find out what happened, but I wasn't invested in the story. This is one of those books that I could have put down and not returned to.
I liked the premise of the book - a young widow needs to get her cotton crop to the market and enlists the help of a neighbor man. Yet, I really found it to be slow moving. I didn't need to know EVERY little detail on the journey. I really didn't.
I also didn't see what it was about the heroine that made the hero love her. To me, she was a rather flat character. On the other hand, the hero, Henry, was very well developed. I enjoyed the various layers and depths to him. Sure, he was a little rough around the edges, but I did find him to be very kind and caring.
I've recently read an article by one of my favorite authors where she explains seven different things that can stop her from finishing reading a novel. As I read her article, I really felt that she was describing my feelings regarding this book perfectly! I found myself not caring about the characters, and I thought it was too slow moving to name a couple of things.
I may give the author another try. But truthfully, I'm not sure.
Still, I know others may enjoy this book, even though I didn't particularly care for it. Please don't just take my opinion on it. There are several really positive reviews on Amazon.
I received a Kindle version of this book for free from Howard Books via NetGalley for the purpose of reviewing. I was not required to like the book or give a positive review. My thoughts and opinions are my own.

A collection of 6 inspirational novellas from popular authors: Linda Goodnight, Janet Tronstad, Debra Clopton, Margaret Daley, Camy Tang, and Lacy Williams.
Rambler's Bride - I found this one to be a little hard to get into. I thought that overall the characters were well developed. I really liked Jericho. This one just didn't stand out to me. My rating for this novella is 3 stars.
Lovebirds at the Heartbreak Cafe - This was one I struggled to get through. I loved the way the trucking community came to Penny's aid. Yet I found that the characters could have been fleshed out more. Still it was a sweet story. My rating for this novella is 3 stars.
Her Mule Hollow Cowboy - I've come to expect a giggle when I read a Debra Clopton book. This was no exception. I just wanted more story! My rating for this novella is 4 stars.
Deadly Hunt - I really enjoyed the suspense in this novella. I was kept engrossed through the entire story. I did feel that Shane's character could have been a little more developed. But overall, this was one of my favorites in this collection. My rating for this one is 4.5 stars
Necessary Proof - I've never read anything by Camy Tang before and was excited to finally read something of hers. I'm pretty certain I've got others of hers somewhere on my Kindle. Anyway, this one was completely unexpected in the way that it grabbed me in and kept me engrossed. I loved both Jane and Alex. My rating for this one is 5 stars.
Kissed by a Cowboy - This was by far my favorite of the collection! I loved all of the characters and sighed happily at the end. I really loved the enterprising Olivia and the way that she had a dream and ran with it. Her uncle Maddox was sweet. I wanted more of this story as well. My rating for this novella is 5 stars.
Overall rating - 4 stars

Author - Janice Thompson

Gabi Delgado longs to be more than just a "material girl" at the high end bridal shop on Galveston Island. She spends her nights sketching and creating her own designs of bridal gowns. Unfortunately for Gabi, her boss only sees her as an alterations specialist. When a handsome reporter from Texas Bride magazine arrives at the bridal shop to do a feature story on the designs created by Gabi's boss, he soon discovers Gabi's talent and decides to feature both Gabi's designs and her boss's. The more time that Gabi spends with Jordan (the reporter) the more that sparks fly between them. Not only is Gabi attracted to him, she's drawn to his faith. Add in Bella Neeley, the Splendora Sisters, two best friends, and a Spanish grandmother, Gabi soon finds herself willing to take a chance and soar on her own.
As always, I know I'm in for a humorous adventure anytime I pick up one of Janice Thompson's books. This one is no exception. I loved all of the characters, especially Gabi. I also loved all of the Fred Astaire/Ginger Rogers references and quotes. Janice has a way of creating characters that yearn for something more, and then gently delivering a solid faith message.
Jordan was such a sweet heart. I loved that Gabi kept thinking of him as Prince William. I also loved the constant references to Cinderella. I know fairy tale retellings are a big thing right now, and this is not one. But I could still see the elements of a simple Cinderella story. I wish the Club Wed, the Parma John's pizzaria, Scarlet's bakery were real spots on Galveston Island that I could visit on my next trip to the Island. But they're not. I have to content myself with visiting them over and over through both the Weddings by Bella series and this one, Weddings by Design. I am eagerly looking forward to book 4.
I received the kindle version of this book for free from Revell Books via NetGalley for the purpose of reviewing. My thoughts and opinions are my own.
